5 Ways To Stay On Top Of Your Health And Nutrition Over The Holidays

When it comes to eating healthy and focusing on my overall health and wellness goals, I usually tend to slack on that during the holiday season.  It’s just so busy, I don’t have as much time to cook healthy meals every day and picking up something quick to eat at a fast food joint when I’m on the go isn’t always the healthiest option but it’s quick.  During the holidays we I’m sure most of you are busy but it’s super important to focus on our health and well-being too, even if we don’t have many minutes to spare.

5 Ways To Stay On Top Of Your Health And Nutrition Over The Holidays

Visit Your Doctor – This may sound like a weird thing to say, but sometimes we get so busy we forget to have our overall health and wellness checked out.  A few years ago, I found out I had a Vitamin D deficiency which is extremely common but most people don’t know they have it. I was feeling super tired and just didn’t have a lot of energy and a few blood tested confirmed my lack of Vitamin D. If you live in an area that gets super cold with little sunshine, it’s important to stay on top of your Vitamin D!

Set Reminders – Do you drink enough water? Depending on your height and weight, we all have different amounts of water we should be drinking daily.  Not only is water good for your skin, it keeps you hydrated.  I schedule reminders on my phone daily to make sure I’m getting enough water intake every few hours, without those reminders I forget!

Walk Or Run – I try to fit in at least 20 minutes of walking  outside every day. Exercise release chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body.  I get the winter blues really bad so when I am feeling down, tired or out of it, I go for a walk and I feel much better afterwards.  The fresh air also does us good!

Take Time Out – When you get a moment in your busy schedule, whether it’s holiday shopping, eating out, making dinner or dealing with the kids, you need a much deserved time out.  Yes, adults need time out too, we need to take care of ourselves, even if it’s an hour or two each week, we need to sit down and relax once in a while.  When my kids are asleep, I’ll take a hot bath, read a book, put on some relaxation sounds and take a little care of myself.

Eat Better –  It’s the holidays and there is no way most of us can avoid the delicious candy, the turkeys, the pies and everything else that comes with fall and winter, but, we can snack better and limit the amount of treats we give ourselves! I find myself snacking a lot before dinner and it’s usually not on anything that will fill me up for long, I’ll be hungry again an hour later but recently I’ve switched my chocolate bars and chips with Protein filled snacks from Optimum Nutrition, not only are they delicious, they keep my tummy full!
